Calcutta University Exam Crisis: Ego Clash Between Government and University Puts Future of 1 Lakh Students at Risk

Calcutta University's Bold Move: A Defiant Step for Students' Future !!

In an unexpected turn of events, Calcutta University (CU) recently held a crucial meeting, known as the syndicate meeting, despite not getting official permission from the West Bengal education department. This meeting was really important because it was needed to approve the rules for upcoming exams in the new four-year undergraduate program. Without these rules, the first semester exams in January were at risk of being cancelled.

Why the Syndicate Meeting is a Big Deal?

The meeting happened on a Tuesday and was a big deal because it was necessary to move forward with the rules for exams that had already been approved by the university's examination regulations committee. The person in charge of keeping things organized at CU, Registrar Debasis Das, stressed how important this meeting was. If it didn't happen, the future of more than 1 lakh students across 140 affiliated colleges would be in trouble.

The Controversy Over Who's in Charge?

What makes this story even more interesting is that the West Bengal education department said no to CU having this meeting. Despite the refusal, the university went ahead and had the meeting anyway. This has caused quite a bit of controversy. The Telegraph reported that when they tried to contact university officials for comments, there was no response. This adds to the confusion and raises questions about who has the authority to make decisions.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that CU has been led by an acting vice-chancellor since June, someone chosen by the governor without consulting the state government. This goes against the rules set in 2019 that say the state government needs to give permission for meetings like these when there's no full-term vice-chancellor.

What This Means for Students?

All this controversy and back-and-forth have created a lot of uncertainty for students. University activities are on hold, and it's unclear when things will go back to normal. However, one thing stands out—Calcutta University is determined to look out for its students. Even in the face of challenges, the university is focused on making sure students can continue their education.

This situation is still developing, and we'll keep you updated on any new information. Stay tuned for more updates on Calcutta University and how it's navigating these challenges to support its students.
