SEM 1 & 2- BCom New Syllabus

Elaboration of New Syllabus for BCom Hons. and Honours with Research Students (Applicable from 2023)

1. Introduction

The University of Calcutta is introducing a new syllabus for BCom Hons. and Honours with Research students starting from the academic session 2023-2024. These regulations aim to provide a comprehensive and enriching learning experience to students pursuing BCom Hons. or Honours with Research degrees. Let's delve deeper into the key aspects of the new syllabus:

2. Duration of the Programme

The BCom Hons. or Honours with Research Programme will span a minimum of eight semesters, each lasting six months. Students have the option to exit the course after completing the 2nd, 4th, or 6th semester if they wish to discontinue. This provides flexibility to students who may have other commitments or career plans. The academic year will follow a fixed schedule, with odd semesters commencing in July and even semesters starting in January.

Additionally, the Three-Year BCom Programme will last for six semesters, and students can also exit after completing the 2nd or 4th semester. This option allows students to pursue other opportunities if needed.

3. Admission and Eligibility

The new regulations apply to students seeking admission to the BCom Hons. course from the academic session 2023-2024. However, those who have already completed any undergraduate degree are not eligible for this course. Students must take admission within three years of passing their previous qualifying examination.

To be eligible for the Four-Year BCom Hons. or Honours with Research course, candidates must meet certain criteria. They need to have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate and 45% marks in the subject or related subject at their previous qualifying examination. Alternatively, candidates scoring 55% marks in the subject or related subject are also eligible. However, for students belonging to the scheduled caste or scheduled tribe community, the minimum requirement is 40% marks in the aggregate or the subject.

4. Attendance Policy

The university emphasises the importance of attendance for students' academic success. To sit for the Semester Examinations, students must attend at least 75% of the total number of classes. This encourages regular participation in lectures and discussions, which is crucial for understanding and learning the course material. Students attending between 60% and 75% of the classes can still appear for the exams by paying the prescribed con donation fees. However, those attending less than 60% of the classes will not be allowed to sit for the Semester Examinations and will have to re-enrol for the same semester the following year.

5. Curriculum and Credit Framework (CCF)

The curriculum for BCom Hons. and Honours with Research programmes is designed to provide a well-rounded education, including various categories of subjects:

A) Discipline Specific Core Course (DSCC)/ Major:

These are the compulsory courses that every student must study. These core courses form the foundation of the degree and cover essential subjects related to commerce and business.

B) Minor:

The minor subjects provide students with the opportunity to explore other areas of interest. Students can choose from a pool of subjects with fewer courses than the major subject.

C) AEC (Ability Enhancement Courses):

These courses focus on language proficiency and include Compulsory English and MIL (Modern Indian Language)/ Alternative English, which consists of Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu.

D) SEC (Skill Enhancement Courses):

The SEC courses are designed to provide skill-based knowledge and competencies. These courses help students develop practical skills relevant to their chosen field.

E) Practical/ Tutorial:

Practical and tutorial components are provided for courses other than AEC & CVAC. These components enhance the learning experience by providing hands-on training and practical application of theoretical knowledge.

F) CVAC (Common Value-Added Course):

CVAC courses focus on Human & Social Values. There are specific compulsory and elective courses under this category, encouraging students to develop a broader understanding of societal values and ethics.

G) Summer Internship:

The mandatory summer internship offers students practical exposure to the real business world. It is a 3-credit internship that students must complete at the end of the 2nd, 4th, or 6th semester. The internship experience will vary depending on the semester of completion.

H) IDC (Inter Disciplinary Course):

These courses provide students with interdisciplinary knowledge by integrating subjects from different fields. There are three IDCs, each carrying 3 credits, to be studied in the first three semesters.

I) Research/ Dissertation:

For students who achieve a CGPA equivalent to 75% marks after successfully completing the first six semesters, there is an option to opt for BCom Hons. with Research degree course in the 7th and 8th semesters. Students choosing this option will be required to take up research projects under the guidance of a faculty member, completing 12 credits in total.

7. Nomenclature of degrees:

A) Students taking up the Major and the Minor subjects from the Commerce Discipline shall pursue              four-year BCom. Honours/ Honours with Research or three-year BCom. degree course.
B) A student pursuing four-year BCom. Honours/ Honours with Research programme shall get:
    a) BCom. three-year honours degree if the student takes exit from the programme after successful             completion of the first six semesters.
    b) BCom. four-year honours degree on successful completion of all the eight semesters without                 research.
    c) BCom. four-year honours with research degree on completion of all the eight semesters with                     research.
C) A student pursuing three-year BCom. programme shall get BCom. three-year degree on successful         completion of all the six semesters.

Conclusion

The new syllabus for BCom Hons. and Honours with Research students at the University of Calcutta offers a comprehensive and flexible learning experience. Students have the freedom to choose their areas of interest through minor subjects and develop practical skills through SECs. The emphasis on attendance ensures regular engagement with the course material, while the internship and research opportunities enhance the practical knowledge of students. Overall, the new syllabus provides an enriching academic journey that prepares students for a successful future in the field of commerce and business.
